East Haddam Lions to Conduct Children's Eye Clinic

The local civic group will test preschoolers next week.

Members of the East Haddam Community Lions will perform pediatric eye screenings of pre-school children, ages 2 through 5, at their respective pre-schools during the week of April 25th.  Several members of the Community Lions have been trained in the use of the PediaVision SO8 Vision Screener, an eye screening implement specifically designed for use on young children.

The screenings are being offered for free by the Community Lions under the Lions Eye Health Program, administered by the Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation.

The vision screener is capable of detecting astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, lazy eye, misalignment of the eyes and pupil size anomalies in a 20-second scan.  Nearly 20 percent of  children between the ages of 2-5 are found to have a problem and need to be referred for treatment.

Early eye vision screenings are important because the earlier a child’s problem is diagnosed the better are the chance is to correct it return normal or near-normal vision by the time the child is 7 years old.

Lions members work worldwide  to help the visually impaired and to eliminate preventable blindness by diagnosing and treating eye disease and diabetes. Local Community Lions clubs schedule eye screenings, collect old eye glasses, sponsor diabetes clinics and do whatever they can to serve their communities.
